Ontario Security Guard License Exam

Ontario Security Guard License Exam

For those looking to join the ranks of security guards in Ontario, the Ontario security guard license exam is a necessary test prior to entering the field. With the proper security guard training and preparation, candidates will feel confident that they possess the proper knowledge regarding health and safety, use of force, communication and radio 10 codes, and general report writing practices required on the job.

Read below for more information on the basic steps after you have completed security guard training.

Where Can I Take A Security Guard Training Course?

The good news about preparing for your Ontario security guard exam is that you can take an online course to prepare. In fact, Security Guard Course (SGC) offers an expert run online training course that provides in-depth instruction of all of the key topics that you may find on the exam. Remember that the Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General governs the administration of these courses and maintains a list of providers who give training in accordance with the training and testing regulation of the Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005.

What Topics Will Be Covered?

While a wide variety of positions can be found in the field of security, including airport security, shopping mall security and special event security, all of these security guard jobs share duties and functions. The syllabus for your security guard training in Ontario will be based around guidelines from the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.

In terms of topics, there are some core areas that will be covered: report writing, communication, use of force, the Canadian legal system and basic security procedures.

Does A Security Guard Need First Aid Training?

If you choose to take an online security guard training course, you will also be required to attend a one day in class first aid training course. Reputable providers will always have an option for a supplemental course in emergency first aid and CPR training since these are essential skills to use in the field of security. This is because one of the top priorities for security guards is protecting the health and safety of the general public, themselves and their team. Since you may find yourself in a variety of situations that may call for first aid, these skills will be invaluable to your everyday work as a security guard.

Your health and safety modules for security guard training will include covering the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS). Familiarize yourself with these two topics in order to properly prepare for your Ontario security guard exam.

Do I Need To Take Use Of Force Training?

A solid understanding of the Criminal Code of Canada sets a good foundation for your security guard training and what is and is not allowed by law. You will learn quickly in your security guard training, and once in the field, that the best practice is always conflict avoidance and de-escalation since this decision puts safety first.

However, if you wish to work higher profile work sites or rise in the ranks of a security guard company, then you will certainly benefit from additional use of force and handcuffing training.  More information can be found here: Use Of Force Class.

Am I Eligible To Be A Security Guard In Ontario?

Before embarking on your security guard training in Ontario, first check to see if you have the very basic qualifications for this line of work. This includes three basic requirements as stated by the Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005, which are being 18 years of age or older, eligible to work in Canada by law, and are in possession of a clean criminal record. If you have all of these basic requirements, you can begin by signing up here.

Why Is Sensitivity Training Important For Security Guards?

Working with an Ontario Security License comes with responsibilities.  You are required to be respectful and professional in your communications with the public.  Whether you have taken Toronto Security Guard Training or Ottawa Security Guard Training we live in a part of the world with diverse backgrounds.  Security guards must be adequately trained in interacting with the general public in a respectful manner not just for easier communication, but also as a representative of whichever organization is employing the security guard in question.  Sensitivity and Communication training is covered in the 33.5 hour online security guard course offered by securityguardcourse.ca.
